The European Commission announced on Monday that it would be subjecting all its development aid to Palestinians, valued at 691 million euros ($729 million), to a thorough review and immediate suspension of all payments.
Oliver Varhelyi, the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, expressed a decisive stance on social media, declaring, “The scale of terror and brutality against Israel and its people is a turning point. There can be no business as usual.”
The deadly incursion by Hamas militants resulted in the loss of 700 Israeli lives and the abduction of dozens, marking the deadliest such event since the Yom Kippur war 50 years ago. In retaliation, Israel launched its most extensive bombardment of Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 400 people.
Varhelyi further announced the postponement of all new budget proposals for Palestinian aid until further notice. He emphasized the urgent need to address the foundations of peace, tolerance, and coexistence, stating, “Incitement to hatred, violence, and glorification of terror have poisoned the minds of too many. We need action, and we need it now.”
Earlier on Monday, Austria disclosed its suspension of aid amounting to tens of millions of euros to Palestinians, citing concerns about ensuring that funds do not reach unintended recipients. Germany also initiated a review of its support in light of the recent developments.
