Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

Elon Musk, CEO of X, has been warned by European Commissioner for Internal Markets and Services, Thierry Breton to comply with EU regulations on harmful online content. This caution comes just before Musk’s interview with former US president Donald Trump on Monday night.

Breton posted on X emphasising that a huge audience also comes with responsibilities, mentioning that this could be dangerous when it comes to promoting or amplifying harmful content within the EU. He reminded Musk that it is mandatory for X to moderate illicit content and minimize the amplification of bad stuff in accordance with European legislation known as the DSA.

Musk should stick to moderation requirements provided by Digital Services Act(DSA) as a reminder on freedom of expression protection against discouraging messages like hatred, violence or misinformation delivery. Breton also pointed out that EU regulators are scrutinising X at present because illegal materials are generally proliferating there along with disinformation.

The caution made by Breton to Musk was met with posts viewed as criticising censorship while quote from Breton’s statement in a humorous meme was used as accompaniment.

The worried about platform’s ability to handle increased traffic during the live streaming of interview between Musk and Trump on X.

This is an ongoing observation of social media platforms by EU regulators emphasizing accountability in content moderation and conformity with the law.
