Tragedy struck at the Islamic High School, Orita Bashorun, Ibadan, on Wednesday, as 35 children lost their lives in a stampede during what was supposed to be a funfair. What should have been a joyful event turned into a nightmare, leaving families in mourning and causing outrage across Oyo State.

Governor Seyi Makinde, evidently shaken by the incident, has vowed to get to the bottom of the tragedy. In his statement, he promised a thorough investigation and declared that those responsible would be held accountable. Makinde also extended his condolences to the grieving parents, although many argue that sympathy alone won’t undo the damage caused by such negligence.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Police Command has swung into action, announcing the arrest of seven individuals connected to the disaster. Among those in custody is a high-profile name: Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, a former queen of the Ooni of Ife and reportedly the main sponsor of the ill-fated event.

The list of suspects also includes Fasasi Abdulahi, the principal of Islamic High School, and several others, including event organizers and collaborators. Police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso confirmed their arrests and detailed their ages and roles.

Adding to the horror, six other individuals are reportedly in critical condition, battling for their lives in various medical facilities. The sight of grieving families and the long list of casualties has left Ibadan reeling from a tragedy that seems entirely preventable.

The case has now been handed over to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police leading the charge. Osifeso assured residents of increased police presence to maintain order and deter any opportunistic criminal activities.

How did such a large-scale event, purportedly organized under the sponsorship of influential individuals, fail to account for the safety of children? The answers, we hope, will emerge as the investigation unfolds.
