THE FAW has become the first home nation to remove its endorsement of FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s campaign for re-election, increasing the heat on the Swiss.

Infantino was forced to abandon his controversial plan to sell off rights in FIFA competitions after facing strong opposition from football stakeholders. Infantino has abandoned plans to off-load minority shareholdings in FIFA competitions to private investment funds after they were universally rejected by football stakeholders.

UEFA warned they would boycott future World Cups – and many other FIFA competitions if the proposal were pushed through. Football Association of Wales statement: The FAW said in a statement they have “withdrawn its support for a second term for Mr Gianni Infantino” as President of FIFA from 2027-2031, citing a loss of confidence in his leadership.

“The recent failures in good governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgement have led us to a position where Mr Gianni Infantino has lost the confidence of the FAW,” said the statement. “While we recognise the importance of innovation and financial sustainability, we are firm in our view that the interests of football must be the primary consideration in all decisions and initiatives.”

Wales joins many other football organisations in the world in coming out against Infantino retaining the top role of world football, even though other organisations such as UEFA and the CONCACAF organisation. Have also called for improvements in football. The recent withdrawal of the commercial proposal comes at a significant time, putting another spotlight on Infantino, who faces re-election.
