A horrific shooting at a Catholic church school in Minneapolis has left two children dead and 17 people injured, with the FBI now investigating the attack as a hate crime and an act of domestic terrorism. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed on X that the bureau is treating the case as a targeted act of violence against Catholics.

The shooter, identified by police as 23-year-old Robin Westman, died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after opening fire through the windows of the Annunciation Church as children attended morning Mass. Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the act as a deliberate and cowardly assault on “innocent children and other people worshipping.”

The shooting, which occurred just as the new school term was beginning, has sent a wave of shock and anger through the community. Authorities have not yet released a definitive motive, but early findings point to premeditation. Westman reportedly used three firearms—a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol—and fired dozens of rounds from outside the church. While no casings were found inside, officials are still investigating whether the shooter entered the building.

The suspect’s mother, Mary Grace Westman, was a former employee at the Annunciation school, a detail that has led investigators to search for any personal connection to the institution. A note that Westman had scheduled to publish online at the time of the shooting has been recovered and is currently being analyzed by investigators.

Why It Matters

The tragic event has prompted an outpouring of grief from around the world. Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, offered his condolences, and President Donald Trump ordered flags to be flown at half-mast at the White House in a show of respect for the victims. The tragedy has also highlighted a deeply polarizing debate in the US, with some officials pushing back against rhetoric that connects the shooting to the transgender community.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz noted the all-too-common nature of such violence across the country, while Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned any hatred directed toward the transgender community. As the city of Minneapolis mourns, the incident serves to remind us all worldwide, of America’s ongoing struggle with gun violence and domestic terrorism.
