The Federal Government of Nigeria, has entered into a contract with three Chinese companies via its Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) in order to take care of the installation and supply of 1,437,500 smart electricity meters throughout the country. The signing took place at the BPE headquarters, located in Abuja, and was attended by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
As stipulated under this agreement, the three companies involved are Ningbo Sanxing Smart Electric Co. Ltd, Messrs XJ Group Corporation, and Ningbo Sanxing Medical & Electric Co. Ltd. The project forms part of the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), which is financed by the World Bank’s $500 million Investment Project Finance arrangement (IPF).
This initiative is aimed at reducing Nigeria’s metering gap of 7.1 million, thereby lessening the difference between the available supply and demand for meters across the nation.
It is anticipated that it will greatly enhance both the financial and technical performance of Distribution Companies (DisCos).
