The FIA, Formula One’s governing body, is to enforce new rules to make the Monaco Grand Prix more exciting by requiring more pit stops.
Addressing this issue, during an F1 Commission meeting in London, officials discussed rule changes for Monaco to combat the processionary aspect to racing at the tight street-based layout.
The FIA confirmed that teams will have to make more than a single pit stop, which will be the minimum in 2023, but further detail will be set at the Sporting Advisory Committee in the coming weeks.
Qualifying and track position is key and in Monaco it is notoriously difficult to overtake. The shift also seeks to add more strategic diversity and surprise.
As modern reliability has rendered the rule unnecessary, the FIA said teams would no longer be limited to the number of gearboxes they are allowed to use during a season.
