A huge inferno erupted at a police facility in the Egyptian Suez Canal city of Ismailia on Monday, October 2 morning, wounding about 25 people before firefighters could contain the conflagration according to reports by the media and emergency services.
Videos shared on social media had revealed the city’s security directorate engulfed in flames. The cause of the blaze had not been revealed as at the time if making this report.
Two witnesses had informed Reuters that firefighters had initially struggled to tackle the blaze but after a gruelling fight three hours later, the state television revealed that it had been contained.
The Egyptian Ambulance Authority had revealed that at least 25 persons had been wounded, in the initial count of casualties.
Civil defence sources had also revealed that parts of the building had caved in to the fire.
Mahmoud Tawfik, the Interior Minister had said that a committee of advisers would be created to look into the causes of the fire and review the construction safety of the building so as to restore its efficiency as quickly as possible. according to his ministry.
This Ismailia fire incident is the newest major fire outbreak to hit Egypt, after a church blaze killed about 41 people in August 2022.
