A freshman computer science student of Veritas University Abuja who has been identified as Joshua Èjuojo Daniel-Ejigbo has allegedly died while exercising at the campus gymnasium.

Reports had surmised that the deceased was exercising when he started foaming in the mouth and thereafter, slumped around 9 pm on Tuesday, April 30.

Meanwhile, an anonymous source had reportedly revealed that the University had called the deceased’s father to inform him about the incident around 11 pm on Tuesday.

Dr. Sanni Bil-hissan, who spoke as a representative of the University had confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Wednesday.

However, a human rights lawyer, Mr Deji Adeyanju, the legal practictioner representing the family had informed SaharaReporters that the parents of the deceased student were suspecting foul play and gross negligence as the cause of death.

Why It Matters:

The parents’ suspicions of foul play in their son’s tragic demise at the university gym are not unfounded, given the circumstance of his death: A sudden onset of foaming at the mouth and eventual collapse during what should have been a regular exercise session.

  • In addition to the suspicions, the late notification to the parents by the university administration about their son’s death adds to the sense of non-transparency, and while a representative of the school, Dr. Sanni Bil-hissan’s had confirmed the incident, there is little else known about the development so far and it does nothing to quell the family’s doubts.
  • With the involvement of a human rights lawyer the family’s insistence can hopefully get the justice that is lacking in this case and has been denied them while and have a sense of closure on their son’s death.

Bottom Line:

It is evident that the parents of the dead student are not satisfied with the explanations provided bu the school management so far, which means that a thorough investigation to address the family’s concerns and ensure accountability within the university’s facilities is very important, and should be done immediately.
