The entire world is currently mourning the passing of the longest reigning British monarch, who has led England for 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II. Her death was announced on Thursday night by the Royal family.
Every sector in the world has been paying respect to the late queen and football inclusive too, Arsenal held a moment of silence before the second half started in their game against FC Zurich in the Europa league. The same goes for Manchester United’s match against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, old Trafford observed a moment of silence to pay tribute to the late queen.
A meeting was held by the premier league officials and the government on Thursday night, to decide if football matches slated for the weekend can continue or be postponed to commensurate with the Royal family. As it stands now, all weekend fixtures will be postponed, as some matches and sports games have already been postponed in England.
England’s friendly game with South Africa has been postponed, BMU golf championship at Wentforth has also been postponed. Friday’s match between Burnely v Norwich has also been postponed.
“Following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Friday’s play between England and South Africa Men at The Oval, along with all scheduled matches in the (women’s domestic) Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, will not take place,” said an ECB statement.
