France has announced its support for the efforts of the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, to foil the military coup in Niger fail.
The French foreign ministry had made this announcement on Saturday, August 5.
The French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna had convened with the Nigerien Prime Minister, Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou and the Niger ambassador in Paris today.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Colonna had stated that the junta in Niamey had until Sunday, August 6 to hand back power, otherwise, risk facing a military intervention from the member countries of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.
“This threat is very serious,” Colonna had said on French public radio.
France had however, not specified whether its support would involve military support for an ECOWAS intervention in Niger.
