Fuji vs Afrobeats: Can Nigeria’s Traditional Sound Still Hold Its Ground?
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

Nigeria’s music scene has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades. Afrobeats, with its infectious rhythms and global appeal, has become the face of the country’s music industry. From Wizkid’s chart-topping collaborations to Burna Boy’s Grammy-winning projects, the genre has captivated international audiences. Yet, amid this global dominance, questions linger: is Fuji music, a genre deeply rooted in Nigeria’s cultural heritage, still relevant today?

Obesere: Fuji Will Never Be Replaced

Abass Akande, popularly known as Obesere, is one of Fuji music’s most prominent voices. With a career spanning more than 30 years, he has witnessed firsthand the rise of Afrobeats and the shifting tastes of Nigerian music fans. Despite these changes, Obesere maintains that Fuji’s relevance is undeniable.

“Over the last 30 years, the biggest lesson I have learnt is to keep going despite the challenges. I faced various struggles carving a niche for myself. I was even tagged an Asakasa singer. It was tough to let people know that it was just slang and I was just being original,” he shared in a recent interview. For Obesere, Fuji is more than just music; it is a cultural expression that continues to resonate with Nigerians across generations.

Evolving Without Losing Identity

One of the reasons Fuji has endured, according to Obesere, is its ability to evolve without losing its core essence. “Being able to connect means that you have to be on top of your game. I evolved with the trend. Permit me to say it’s ‘Street OT’. I didn’t look down on myself as if I’m too old. If you see yourself as an old singer, you will be overtaken. But that is not to say that you shouldn’t allow the younger ones to progress. As they move, you maintain your lane discipline and continue to earn your respect,” he explained.

This philosophy underscores the balance between staying relevant and respecting tradition. Fuji, he argues, may not dominate global charts the way Afrobeats does, but its cultural significance ensures it remains a vital part of Nigeria’s musical landscape.

Younger Artists Carrying the Torch

Interestingly, the next generation of Nigerian musicians is finding ways to keep Fuji alive within contemporary sounds. Artists like Asake and Burna Boy have incorporated Fuji-inspired beats and rhythms into their music, introducing the genre to younger audiences in subtle ways.

“It’s a great thing that our younger and raving talents are showcasing the essence of Fuji and taking some recipes to continue to dish out good music. It has always been like that, but it’s louder now,” Obesere noted. He sees this as a positive development, one that bridges the gap between traditional and modern Nigerian music.

Honoring Roots in Contemporary Projects

Some contemporary projects pay direct homage to Fuji. Adekunle Gold’s recent album, titled Fuji, is a clear nod to the genre’s enduring influence. Obesere praised Gold for celebrating the roots of Nigerian music and helping to preserve the cultural heritage embedded in Fuji. Such initiatives, he believes, are crucial for ensuring that the genre continues to inspire new generations of listeners and musicians alike.

Fuji’s Enduring Cultural Significance

While Afrobeats enjoys commercial dominance and global recognition, Fuji’s value lies in its authenticity and tradition. “Hip-hop will never override Fuji. The latter is a borrowed culture, but Fuji is our own, and it’s traditional,” Obesere emphasized. Unlike genres that blend international influences, Fuji remains distinctly Nigerian, rooted in Yoruba rhythms, street narratives, and communal storytelling.

For Obesere, relevance is not measured solely by streaming numbers or social media virality. It is also about cultural preservation, respect, and the ability to adapt while maintaining a unique identity. By staying true to its origins and evolving alongside modern trends, Fuji has demonstrated resilience that few genres can match.

A Coexistence of Old and New

The Nigerian music industry today illustrates a coexistence of tradition and innovation. Afrobeats may dominate international charts, but Fuji continues to thrive in its own sphere, influencing new artists and maintaining a loyal fan base. Obesere’s career exemplifies how traditional sounds can endure even in an era of rapid musical change.

As Nigerian music continues to capture global attention, Fuji stands as a reminder that heritage and modernity can coexist. Through the insights of artists like Obesere, it is clear that while Afrobeats may rule the charts, Fuji will always hold a special place in the country’s cultural and musical identity.
