“Eko o ni baje oooo” translates to “Lagos will not spoil” or “Lagos will prosper.”
In an effort to bolster the economic resilience of Lagos and support its residents during these challenging times, the governor has announced a subsidized food initiative. This initiative, disclosed in a statement by Gbenga Omotosho, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, aims to enhance access to essential food items for Lagosians.
Scheduled to commence on Sunday, March 17, 2024, the initiative underscores the Lagos government’s commitment to addressing potential food insecurity concerns among its populace.
To ensure transparency and prevent exploitation, the program will implement a voucher system during its initial phase. Independent payment processors and food vendors have been meticulously chosen to oversee the distribution process, providing real-time data to facilitate monitoring efforts. This voucher system reflects a cautious approach aimed at curbing potential misuse of the subsidy program.
In a bid for transparency, the government has published set prices for the subsidized goods. For instance, a 5kg bag of rice will be available for purchase at N5,325 (approximately $12.30), with a 1kg option priced at N1,065 ($2.45). Similar pricing structures have been established for other essential food items, with detailed information disseminated through various media channels.
The program will initially operate in designated markets across five administrative divisions of the state: Ikeja (27 locations), Lagos Island (6 locations), Ikorodu (9 locations), Epe (5 locations), and Badagry (10 locations).
