Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has once again rewritten the history books with her latest cinema release, Behind The Scenes, which has officially become the highest-grossing Nigerian film of 2025.

In just one month after hitting cinemas, the FilmOne Entertainment–distributed movie generated a remarkable ₦2.103 billion, making it the fastest Nollywood title to surpass the ₦2 billion mark.

The film also delivered a record-breaking opening weekend, setting five new benchmarks, including the biggest single-day earnings on Boxing Day with ₦129.5 million.

FilmOne Entertainment confirmed the achievement in an official announcement, describing the film’s performance as unprecedented.

“Behind the Scenes has officially broken and shattered records, hitting over 2 billion at the box office and becoming the first Nollywood film in Africa to cross the ₦2 billion mark,” the distributor said.

“This is also the highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time in Africa, the UK, and Ireland, and makes @funkejenifaakindele the first filmmaker to rank #1 at the box office in Africa for three consecutive years. West Africa’s highest-grossing filmmaker, writer, director, and producer of all time.”

The landmark success further strengthens Akindele’s position at the top of the industry, as Behind The Scenes becomes her third project to exceed the ₦1 billion mark at the box office, underlining her unmatched commercial influence in West African cinema.

Analysts have credited the film’s outstanding run to a mix of early screenings, strong marketing, a powerful ensemble cast, and a storyline that resonates with audiences through themes of family, loyalty, and societal pressure.

The movie stars Scarlet Gomez, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, and Uche Montana, whose performances have drawn large crowds to cinemas across different regions.

Reacting to the milestone, Akindele expressed deep gratitude to her fans and supporters.

“Joy overflows! Our heart is full of gratitude to God and to you, my amazing fans who have truly become family. Thank you for showing up, supporting, and believing in this journey. Reaching this incredible milestone and still counting would not have been possible without you. I am deeply grateful. Let’s keep pushing, growing, and supporting the Funke Akindele Network brand together,” she said.

As Behind The Scenes continues its cinema run, Funke Akindele’s legacy as one of Nollywood’s most influential and successful filmmakers continues to grow.
