Gaza faces an escalating humanitarian crisis as Israel issues a new evacuation order. Thousands of Gazans have fled the community in central Gaza following the order for residents from Al-Bureij, northeast of Deir to evacuate, exacerbating the already dire situation. Deir, one of the few areas not heavily impacted by Israeli forces, now faces an influx of displaced individuals. Many families have resorted to using donkey carts and rickshaws to transport their belongings, with others walking several kilometers to reach safer areas such as Deir or al-Zawayda town. Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, reported that only 14% of the Gaza Strip remains free from evacuation orders, leaving people with minimal time and options for relocation.
Ceasefire Negotiations
Currently, Israel and Hamas are negotiating a ceasefire and hostage release deal with the help of Egyptian mediators. However, Hamas has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “procrastination” and “evasion” by introducing new conditions to the longstanding truce proposal. This has further complicated the negotiations and added to the suffering of Gazans who have already lost their homes due to ongoing hostilities.
Health Crisis
Amid the conflict, the Gaza Health Ministry has reported a resurgence of polio, a disease previously eradicated in the enclave. This development poses a serious risk of an epidemic that could affect both Gaza and neighboring countries, undermining global efforts to eradicate polio. The dire health situation is compounded by limited access to clean water, which has exacerbated sanitation issues. Displaced individuals are suffering from skin diseases, while children are experiencing severe health problems, including fevers and refusal to eat or be breastfed, according to Hussam Abu Safiyah, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.
Casualties and Conflict Overview
The conflict began with a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the capture of around 250 hostages. In response, Israeli forces have killed more than 39,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, with health authorities indicating that over half of the deceased are women and children. Israel reports that approximately a third of those killed were fighters. Israel has also lost around 330 soldiers in the conflict.
Ongoing Struggles and Future Prospects
The continuation of the war and delays in the ceasefire agreement are deepening the crisis in Gaza, with worsening health conditions and a high risk of disease outbreaks. The urgent need for a resolution between Hamas and Israel remains critical. However, Israel has stated it will not end the conflict until Hamas is defeated, leaving many Palestinians in a state of suffering and uncertainty. The inability to reconcile Israel’s demands with the dire situation of Palestinians only exacerbates the plight of the Gazan population.
