Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji has strongly condemned a controversial post on X that advised Igbo men to avoid marrying women from their own ethnic group.

The post, which sparked widespread backlash, claimed Igbo wives were likely to falsely accuse their husbands of abusing their daughters.

The user wrote: “Dear Igbo men, instead of marrying Igbo woman that’ll falsely accuse you of raping your daughter, better look outside for a wife… Go to East Africa, especially Rwanda and pick a damsel.”

Genevieve, who hails from Mbaise in Imo State, rejected the narrative, calling out the mindset behind such generalizations.

In her response, she stated: “In other words, instead of checking yourself and taking accountability, go for the unsuspecting and carry on with your evil. Got it.”

While some attempted to defend the tweet by saying it was directed at false accusers rather than all Igbo women, Genevieve maintained that the message was harmful and misleading.

She emphasised the danger of broad stereotypes, adding: “The same way a woman can’t tell an abusive man apart from a good one is the same way you shouldn’t say avoid all Igbo women. ‘Not all women.”

Her comments have since fueled deeper conversations online about ethnic bias, accountability, and gender-based stereotypes.
