Don’t you think carbohydrates are one of the nutrients that have been hated over the years? Body builders frown on carbohydrates because many diets and fitness trends label them as the enemy of good health. If fitness coaches were to be given a coin for every time they tell their client to “cut out carbs,” they’d be rich!

But is this really the whole truth? The misconception is often fueled by the negative impact of refined sugars and processed foods (carbohydrates). In reality, carbohydrates are an essential part of our diets that support the vital functions of the body and give us energy. So, before you throw out that slice of bread, let’s take a closer look at what carbohydrates really are.

What Are Carbohydrates?

In simple terms, carbohydrates are nutrients that provide energy to the body and they’re of two main types: simple and complex.

Simple carbohydrates are sugars that is found in sweets, and sodas etc. that give you quick energy. While complex carbohydrates are starches and fiber found in foods like rice and bread.

One of the biggest differences between these two types of carbohydrates is that the simple carbohydrates break down faster than the complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates keep you fuller for longer.

When talking about carbohydrates, the talk about the glycemic index always pops up. Basically what it means is that it measures how fast a food raises your blood sugar levels. Food with a high glycemic index like bread raises blood sugar quickly. On the other hand, low glycemic index foods like oats raise your blood sugar slowly to keep energy levels steady.

What Type of Carbohydrates Are Good For Consumption?

Whenever you want to eat carbohydrates, go for the good ones. The good carbohydrates are the complex carbs that supply you with steady energy. These carbs are also rich in fiber, which helps your digestive system work smoothly.

Examples of good carbohydrates include: Brown rice, beans, lentils, apples, berries, spinach, and broccoli.

Bad Carbohydrates: The Downsides

It’s obvious that these types of carbohydrates are bad for your health. They don’t give the body much nutrients, and only provide a quick burst of energy. Theis types of carbohydrates are called the simple carbs, and eating too many of them can lead to weight gain, obesity, and even type 2 diabetes over time.

Examples: Sugary drinks, candy, white bread, and processed snacks.

How Do You Identify Good and Bad Carbohydrates?

The major way is to actually look at the ingredients of the products you’re buying, and watch for added sugars or processed ingredients. But to be on the safer side, just opt for foods like whole grains, and fruits. Despite the fact that good carbs are great for your health, you still need to eat them in the right amount to avoid overeating.

Bottom Line

Carbohydrates have gotten a bad reputation over the years, but the truth is, not all carbs are bad for you. While things like sugary drinks and junk food can lead to health problems, good carbs like whole grains, fruits, and veggies give you steady energy and help with digestion. The trick is knowing the difference and making smart choices.
