The former Nigerian President, Goodluck Ebelechukwu Jonathan, has cautioned citizens in the country to avoid electing officials who would buy their conscience at the 2023 ballots.
Goodluck Jonathan had also urged Nigerians not to support candidates who would ruin the future of the country’s offspring.
This call came while the former president was giving the opening remarks at the Abuja memorial summit for the late Captain Idahosa Okunbo, on Saturday.
He further implored voters to be cautious when casting their ballots in the general elections.
He had said: “Ahead of the 2023 elections, we are getting ready to be wooed and wowed at campaign grounds by different politicians seeking various offices.
“But these thoughts are beyond 2023. It is about Nigeria and the kind of leadership it deserves now and, in the future, to ensure that our country assumes its true place among the comity of nations.
“We must move away from the politics of bread and butter and ensure that we do not elect leaders that will buy our conscience today and mortgage the future of our children and grandchildren.
“We must endeavor to elect only those that will leave legacies of unity, peace, and development,”
Goodluck Jonathan had additionally urged political leaders at all levels to consciously make the required sacrifices that promote patriotism, arouse loyalty, and motivate people to give their all for their nation. He also exhorted political heads to determine the size of their footprints and the type of legacies they were leaving behind.
