A stir has been caused in the latest hullabaloo with the new gathering around Google users’ attempts to search on the shootout Donald Trump was nearly killed in showing no result. Instead, a pop-up to autofills suggested topics related to other presidents and famous historical figures. As a result, the accusations of election manipulation and censorship have occurred.
The date was July 13, 2024 when a shooting was made on Donald Trump during the celebration of the 4th of July holiday in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Nevertheless, when users searched for information about the incident, Google’s related search feature did not include any information about the story. Captured screenshots showed that typing in “Trump assassination attempt” did not produce further terms, while typing the names of some other presidents and legislative figures did.
The skeptics, such as Donald Trump Jr., have blamed Google for intentionally interfering with elections in order to assist the Democratic party. A Google representative, on the other hand, assured that no manual action was taken against those predictions and the company’s systems have protective measures against autocomplete predictions that relate political violence to the parties.
Google stated that problems had occurred due to system updates not being done, and it is working on solving the problems. The point of the company’s message is that it is a feature for quick searches in the form of autocomplete and if a user prefers to do so, they can still search for anything.
Besides the backlash, this incident also evoked questions of Big Tech companies’ direct and indirect participation in elections and their bias against the conservative side. There have also been similar instances of this kind. Critics have claimed that the company is involved in the silencing of the right-wing people and disarming of the search results damaging Democratic individuals.
