The pressing question that’s been on everyone’s minds revolves around the condition of Governor Akeredolu, who has yet to return to his leadership role as the Governor of Ondo State. Speculation is rife, with many suspecting that his illness is more severe than disclosed.
Richard Olatunde, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Akeredolu, recently released a statement reiterating that the governor remains in Germany, still recovering. This statement aimed to quell rumors that he would be returning to Nigeria soon.
The statement read, “Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, has not yet returned to the country. The governor is currently still on a medical vacation in Germany. We would like to assure the good people of Ondo State and Nigerians in general that the governor’s return will be widely publicized.”
Despite the formal transfer of power to his deputy, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Governor Akeredolu’s prolonged absence has sparked division within the government and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State. Opposition parties have seized the moment to criticize the administration.
Governor Akeredolu initially informed of his medical leave in a letter dated June 5th, with his expected return set for July 6th. Labor unions in the state advised him to prioritize his health and not rush back to work.
Prayer sessions have been organized for his recovery by various groups and associations. However, recent developments indicate political maneuvering in his absence.
Sources suggest that Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has been meeting with APC leaders to seek forgiveness for his actions during the governor’s absence. There were reports of a plot to coerce the governor into resigning on health grounds. Some members of the Executive Council aligned with Aiyedatiwa believed that the governor might not return or would resign, paving the way for the deputy governor to assume power.
In this political drama, positions and ministries were allegedly promised to those who supported this plan. The Chief of Staff, Gbenga Ale, was reportedly assured the position of Secretary to the State Government, and Commissioner Rasaq Obe was promised the deputy governorship.
However, the release of pictures and videos showing the recovering governor by his wife, Betty Akeredolu, and the Majority Leader of the House of Assembly, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, has thrown Aiyedatiwa and his caucus into confusion.
Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa has reportedly met with prominent APC leaders, including Iyiola Omisore, Chief Pius Akinyelure, and Kayode Fayemi, in an attempt to gain their support and persuade the governor to overlook his actions.
These developments highlight the complex and often murky world of Nigerian politics, where personal interests often take precedence. It’s a reminder that political intrigue and power struggles are not uncommon in the country’s political landscape.
