Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State is in Rabat, Morocco, rubbing shoulders with African leaders at the Africa Investment Forum (AIF) Market Days 2024. The event, themed “Leveraging Innovative Partnerships for Scale,” is a hotspot for big talk and giant promises.

In a gathering that included the President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Femi Adesina, and several Nigerian state governors, Sani seized the moment to promote his vision of a “world-class agro-industrial zone” for Kaduna. This ambitious project, he claims, will turn the state into an investment haven.

In a statement he personally signed, because nothing shows sincerity like a governor putting pen to paper, Sani assured that Kaduna under his leadership is “creating a conducive environment via a suite of incentives for investments to thrive.” Of course, we’ve all heard variations of this song before. Conducive environment? Check. Investment incentives? Double-check. Real outcomes? that’s where the check ends.

This year’s AIF event focuses on keyword like human capital, environmental sustainability, technology, and SME growth. Agriculture productivity and agro-industrial development also feature prominently. These are undeniably critical areas, but will the Kaduna State government translate this dialogue into action?

Sani further noted that his administration’s agenda aligns perfectly with the objectives of the forum, emphasizing economic vibrancy, public and private capital attraction, skills development, and job creation. But how often have Nigerian leaders painted such rosy pictures, only for citizens to be left struggling with the harsh reality of unemployment, failing infrastructure, and economic stagnation?

To his credit, Sani’s vision for a world-class agro-industrial zone could, if realized, significantly boost Kaduna’s economy. However, his citizens will need more than words, they need timelines, measurable outcomes, and a commitment to transparency. We are waiting for the governor to prove that this trip to Morocco is more than a networking exercise.
