Gunmen alleged to be herdsmen are presently on a rampage in Plateau State University in the Bokkos Local Government Area.
A student fleeing from the onslaught had told newsmen from SaharaReporters via a phone call, that everyone had scampered to safety upon hearing gunshots inside the university.
The attack had occurred around 9:00 pm on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
Monday, Kassah, the Transition Committee Chairman of Bokkos, had confirmed the incident saying that there were series of attacks last (Thursday) night and the attacks had claimed six lives.
“The attackers are still very visible, they come two or three on a motorcycles and are rampaging in Mandung, Butura, Chikam and other communities around the State University, all communities are in the Butura region of Bokkos.
Security agents have arrived and more security deployments have been made. A student of the University was gunned down last night in his room outside the campus and another one was killed this morning.”
The Registrar of the University, Yakubu Ayuba had also reacted to the incident,
In his words:
“The University Community woke up to the sad news of another heartless attack on Chikam, a community nearby the University. The sad event led to the loss of a 200L Computer Science student of the University residing in Chikam, by the name Dading James Jordan.”
This unfortunate incident is coming despite the best efforts of the Plateau State government, security agencies, the Management of the University as well as other stakeholders involved to improve the security situation in and around the university environ and the surrounding communities.
The State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang had additionally condemned the ugly incident, and appealed for calm from the residents.
He reassured citizens, especially students, of the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and properties of the state’s residents and had urged them to remain composed in the face of the tragedy, as the government was determined to apprehend and prosecute every single individual responsible for the evil act.
The Plateau State Police Command, has yet to release a statement at the time of filing this report.
