Harry Kane reveals the England team felt a sense of déjà vu as they crashed out of the World Cup in agonizing style, letting their lead slip late in the day against Argentina to narrowly miss out on a place in the final.
It was Anthony Gordon’s 55th minute goal that put England on course for a place at football’s ultimate tournament but a more conservative shape saw Argentina press home their dominance in possession.
Enzo Fernandez equalized five minutes from time with a late thunderbolt before Lautaro Martinez headed home a Lionel Messi cross in stoppage-time to snatch a thrilling 2-1 win.
“It’s a bit of déjà vu to be honest,” admitted Kane afterwards. “We controlled the game for large parts but when you score you’ve got to carry on putting pressure on the ball and then you see them gain momentum, which I feel like we’ve dropped off for the last four tournaments. That seems to be the one piece that we’re missing.”
It is another cruel missed opportunity for Kane who has led the Three Lions to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, two major tournament finals and a quarter-final and it will have been his last tournament in England’s red and white but the captain said the time was not right to consider retirement.
Meanwhile teammate Dan Burn believes England’s change in approach following Gordon’s breakthrough did cost them a spot in the showpiece event.
“We went too deep when we scored and let them gain possession,” saidBurn.
“It hurts really,really bad to get to that close.”
