Mother’s Day is around the corner already. Whew! It seems like it was just yesterday that we all screamed “Happy New Year” to our loved ones and neighbours, and now we’re in March, gearing up and making preparations for Mother’s Day. Where is the year running to?
Mother’s Day is an occasion which is celebrated globally to express respect, honor, and love towards mothers. We honour the contribution of mothers everywhere, acknowledge the role of them in the society and celebrate them on this day.
On a typical Mother’s Day, we wake up, pick up our phones, scroll through our gallery on the quest to find that perfect picture of our mum and caption it with a cute message to post on social media.
We call our mums, send them cute gifts and pray for them. We all try our best to be extra nice to our mothers because this is their day and they deserve it.
However, for some of us, Mother’s Day can be very tough. Might be because of long-distance from our loved one, the passing/death of a motherly figure or even due to an estranged relationship with her. Whatever the case might be for you, hold on tight because things will definitely get better for you, one way or another.
I’m all for the special gestures we show our mothers on Mother’s Day but I also believe that nothing beats spending quality time with our mothers and trying out special activities with them on their day.
I understand that some of the time, distance can be a barrier and come in the way of this. This article was written with this problem in mind. Below, I have enumerated the various activities you can try out with your mum, either from a long-distance or in person:
Wholesome In-person Activities To Try:
Watching Movies:
It could be the both of you in the living room watching a comfort movie on the TV or on your laptop/phone sitting close together on the couch. My favourite thing about this particular activity is the remarks that mothers always have in handy for each scene —there’s always something to comment on or exclaim about.
Make DIY’s Together:
If your mum is into crafts and likes to keep herself busy on most days, this activity is perfect for her. For DIY (do-it-yourself) ideas, think candle making, floral wreaths, crotchet tops, wall art etc. the list is endless and you’re only limited by what you can think of.
Plan An Outing:
It could be a dinner night for just you and your mum, a fun day at an art exhibit centre, museum or beach, a picnic at a park nearby, or a movie date. This activity doesn’t have to be expensive. What’s important is that you get to spend quality time with your mum, doing something different from what you both normally do when you’re together. Make sure though, that you carefully plan out the day so it ends up being something extra special for you both.
Cook Together:
Try out the new recipe that you’ve been seeing online, together. Try your hands at baking a new dessert or cooking that special sauce/stew with your mom while sharing hot gist about work, family or anything really.
Plan a Photoshoot:
Pictures say a thousand words. Hire a photographer or go to a good studio to take countless pictures of you and your mum that you’ll adore for years to come.
Wholesome Long-distance Activities To Try:
Have a Skype/Face-time Date:
Basically a video call date. Schedule a time when both you and your mum will be free and have a heart to heart talk. Your mother will be glad for this.
Curate a Mother’s Day Package for Her:
Employ the services of a professional yo help curate the special Mother’s Day package. Items can include a customised mug, a face-towel with her name spelt in it, gift cards etc. Get creative with the items you know your mum will absolutely adore.
Make a DIY Craft and Ship It To Her:
Get artsy and create a unique DIY craft for your mum. It could be a personalised Bath Bomb, a flower vase that you made from scratch, a painting of you two, a scrapbook, a video you’ve curated from the years, etc.
Book Her A Spa Appointment:
Mothers are universally known to be workaholics, so whats better than a spa appointment to help her unwind after the day’s activities. She’ll definitely thank you for this.
Brilliant ideas. Thank you for highlighting them… will defo be trying one or two from here.
I love how it is mentioned, in this article that some individuals have terse relationships with their mothers. Thank you for pointing that out
Lovely ideas. I can’t wait to put them into practice. It’s been so long I spent quality time with my mum
