Are you kidding me Nigeria? The House of Representatives just passed a bill that would give people a whopping FIVE MONTHS OFF WORK if they lose their spouse! Five months! Seriously? While we’re struggling with insecurity, good shortage, high cost of living, our brilliant leaders are focused on extended mourning vacations?
Sponsor Says “Think of the Culture!”
This genius bill, brought to you by Honourable Saidu Abdullahi, apparently solves the critical national crisis of needing more time to grieve. Abdullahi says it’s all about respecting cultural and religious traditions, completely ignoring the fact that most people can manage a funeral and some mourning within a reasonable amount of time, you know, like the TWO WEEKS most employers already offer.
World-Class Welfare…Maybe Not
Apparently, Abdullahi thinks this puts Nigeria at the forefront of worker well-being. Let’s be honest, five months off with no pay sounds more like a recipe for financial disaster than a compassionate policy. Who can afford five months without a paycheck? Most Nigerians are living paycheck to paycheck as it is!
So What Happens Now?
This bill is now bouncing around committees. Hopefully, some common sense will prevail and they’ll send it straight to the shredder. Let’s get back to real problems, We need representatives who are focused on jobs, the economy, and security, not five-month bereavement breaks!
