Beninese-French singer and Grammy-winning artist Angélique Kidjo has cautioned Afrobeats stars against becoming complacent with their music, urging them to keep evolving creatively.
Speaking in an interview with Netng, Kidjo commended the global success and recognition of Afrobeats but emphasized the importance of innovation and artistic growth.

“It’s a trend now, Afrobeats. Everybody likes it. But how do we renew it every time around?… Repetitive things and doing the same thing over and over again,” she said.
Kidjo highlighted that while Afrobeats has gained worldwide appeal, artists must remain disciplined and professional if they want to sustain its influence. She also encouraged them to aim for a broader impact beyond their home countries.
“Because you’re such and such in your country doesn’t mean you’re such and such everywhere else,” she added.
The veteran performer’s message serves as a reminder for Afrobeats artists to keep pushing creative boundaries and ensure the genre continues to evolve on the global stage.
