Over the ban of Okada Riders in the Cele-Ijesha area of Lagos State, A policeman was killed in the chaos that erupted over the ban, as Okada Riders rioted and even injured a police officer carrying out his duty.
According to witnesses, This incident happened at 11 am on Wednesday, when a police officer stopped a motorcycle rider from playing the mile 2 cele axis, other motorcyclists riders who witnessed this immediately came to the aid of their colleague, and this led to a clash between policemen and the motorcycle riders.
The policemen tried their best to drive motorcyclists away, but they didn’t budge, it was becoming violent, one of the policemen tried to scare them off by bringing out a gun, but unfortunately, they ganged on the policeman and killed him.
The other policemen seeing that their colleague has been killed, all ran away and called for reinforcement before the reinforcement could get there the Okada Riders have all fled the scene.
The eyewitness said, “The policemen were trying to arrest one of the motorcycle riders shuttling the Cele-Ijesha and Mile 2 areas. It was while the motorcyclist was resisting arrest that other motorcyclists intervened and demanded the release of their colleague’s motorcycle.
“When the policemen refused and tried to drive the motorcyclists away, they refused to back down and stopped the policemen from leaving the spot. Then, one of the policemen tried to scare them away with his gun but they overpowered him and killed him.”
On contacting the Police spokesperson of the Lagos State Police force, Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident and said that two motorcyclists have been arrested and that a number of 41 motorcycles have been impounded.
