President Donald Trump, flanked by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and influential podcaster Joe Rogan, signed an executive order to fast-track research on psychedelic drugs, the move highlights a growing alliance between the administration and “alternative” health advocates who argue that traditional pharmaceuticals have failed the nation’s most vulnerable, particularly war veterans.

The Power of the Podcaster

Joe Rogan has long used his platform to advocate for the medicinal use of psychedelics, and his presence at the signing ceremony underscored his role in moving this issue from the counterculture to the Oval Office. The order focuses heavily on treating severe anxiety, depression, and PTSD—conditions that contributed to nearly 6,400 veteran suicides in 2023. Many advocates at the ceremony argued that traditional antidepressants often fail or cause alienating personality changes, making the “one-dose” potential of psychedelics a more attractive alternative.

How the Podcast King Pushed Trump to Legalize Psychedelic Research

What the Executive Order Actually Does

While the news is being hailed as a “legalization” by some, the reality is more focused on the laboratory than the pharmacy. The order directs the FDA and the Department of Veterans Affairs to share data and remove the “red tape” that currently makes it nearly impossible for scientists to obtain Schedule I substances like LSD or psilocybin. Trump stated that the order will facilitate the “fast rescheduling” of any psychedelic drug that receives official FDA approval for medical benefit.

The Ibogaine “Cure”

During the ceremony, the President singled out ibogaine, a powerful psychedelic derived from an African shrub, as a potential “miracle” drug. Trump cited data suggesting an 80 to 90 percent reduction in depression symptoms within a month of use. “Can I have some, please?” the President joked, highlighting his high level of optimism for the project. Medical officials were quick to note that the full side effects are still unknown, with some evidence suggesting ibogaine can cause heart damage, further emphasizing the need for the newly authorized federal research.

The “Simulated Reality” Warning

This medical pivot comes as the world remains on edge due to the ongoing Iran war and a global debate over technology. Interestingly, the signing occurred just one day after Pope Leo XIV warned against a “transformation in our relationship with truth” through simulated realities like AI, a theme often explored by the very psychedelic researchers Trump has just empowered.

As federal labs begin to gear up for a new era of “shroom” science, the administration is betting that a radical change in drug policy will provide the breakthrough needed to save thousands of American lives.
