Big crowds gathered in Niamey, Niger’s capital, today to call for the American military to leave the country. This comes after Niger’s leaders, who came to power in a recent military takeover, decided to end a cooperation agreement with the U.S.

The protestors marched together, waving Nigerien flags, much like those who demonstrated against France before their forces left Niger last year. Signs were held up that said things like “USA go home!” showing support for the government’s decision to kick out U.S. troops.

Why the Change of Heart?

Up until the military takeover, Niger had been a close partner with both France and the United States. These countries had bases in Niger to help fight extremist groups in the nearby Sahel region. However, the new leaders seem to be looking elsewhere for help.

Russia Steps In

Just recently, military instructors and equipment from Russia arrived in Niger. This is a sign that the new government wants to work more closely with Russia. Some people at the protest even waved Russian flags. However, others worry that Russia might try to stay in Niger permanently, just like France and the U.S. before them.

What Happens Next?

It’s not clear exactly when or even if U.S. troops will actually leave Niger. There have been hints that some in Niger’s government might still want them to stay. One reason for this might be a big U.S. drone base located in Niger.

Violence Still a Problem

No matter who’s helping with security, the situation in the Sahel region remains dangerous. Fighting between extremist groups and government forces has gotten worse, with thousands of people being killed last year.
