Renowned actress and singer Jane Birkin, originally from Britain, has passed away at the age of 76 in Paris. Birkin, a rebellious figure of the 1960s who captivated the hearts of the French, was hailed as a “timeless Francophone icon” by the French Culture Ministry. Reports suggest that she was discovered deceased at her residence, as confirmed by individuals close to her. After experiencing heart issues in previous years, Birkin had a mild stroke in 2021.
Internationally recognized for her 1969 hit song “Je t’aime…moi non plus,” where she collaborated with her former partner, the late French singer and songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, Birkin had embraced France as her second home since the late 1960s. Beyond her musical achievements and appearances in numerous films, she was admired for her warm demeanor and unwavering advocacy for women’s and LGBT rights.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo expressed her condolences, describing Birkin as the “most Parisian of the English.” Hidalgo fondly remembered the singer’s songs, laughter, and her unmistakable accent that had resonated with the city. Born Jane Mallory Birkin in London in December 1946, she was the daughter of British actress Judy Campbell and Royal Navy commander David Birkin.
At the age of 17, Birkin made her debut on stage and went on to star in the 1965 musical “Passion Flower Hotel,” composed by conductor and composer John Barry, whom she married briefly. Her fame grew further when she appeared naked in a controversial threesome sex scene in Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 film “Blow-Up” before venturing to France at the age of 22. In France, she became an icon, partly due to her tumultuous romance with the tormented French superstar Gainsbourg, as well as her tomboyish style and charming British accent when speaking French, which some believed she cultivated intentionally.
Birkin’s influence extended to the fashion world, inspiring the renowned Birkin bag by the French luxury house Hermes. The bag’s creation was sparked when Hermes’ CEO, Jean-Louis Dumas, witnessed Birkin struggling with her straw bag during a flight to London, causing its contents to spill onto the floor.
She leaves behind two daughters: Charlotte, a singer and actress born in 1971, and Lou Doillon, also an actress born in 1982. Birkin had another daughter, Kate, who tragically passed away in 2013, leaving a lasting impact on her family and fans alike.
