Fuji legend Otunba Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, widely celebrated as K1 De Ultimate, has formally stepped forward as one of the contenders for the Awujale of Ijebuland seat, which became vacant following the passing of Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON.

K1 made his interest known through a letter dated December 3, 2025, addressed to the leadership of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House in Ijebu-Ode.

In the document, he explained that his decision to join the race is grounded in long-standing Ijebu traditions and supported by the provisions of the Ogun State Chieftaincy Laws.

Providing details of his lineage, the musician stated that he was born on March 3, 1957, and is a direct descendant of the Oba Jadiara branch of the Fusengbuwa dynasty. He described himself as a “true-born son” of the family, noting that this ancestry qualifies him to participate in the succession process.

Wasiu Ayinde also reflected on his consistent promotion of Ijebu identity—both through his music and his public engagements. He recalled that the late Awujale honoured him in 2023 with the titles Olori Omo-Oba and Otunba Afidipotemole of Akile Ijebu, which he regards as recognition of his cultural contributions across Ijebuland, Yorubaland, and Nigeria.

His expression of interest comes at a time when the Fusengbuwa Ruling House has been officially directed to begin compiling a list of eligible princes. The instruction was issued by the Awujale Interregnum Administration Council through the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Oke Abiodun Adebanjo, confirming that it is the Fusengbuwa family’s turn to produce the next Awujale under the rotational system.

The ruling family executives—Chairman Otunba Abdul-Lateef Adebayo Owoyemi, Deputy Chairman Otunba Adedokun Ajidagba, and Vice Chairman Prof. Fassy Adetokunbo Yusuf—were given a 14-day window to submit shortlisted candidates to the Executive Chairman.

A major symbolic step in the succession process will take place on December 2, 2025, when the Ogbeni Odi takes possession of the Awujale’s Staff of Office, marking the official start of the next stage of traditional rites.

The council has appealed for unity and strict observance of cultural protocols, emphasizing the significance of the Awujale throne—one of the most respected traditional institutions in Nigeria. The late Oba Adetona’s remarkable six-decade reign, noted for stability and national influence, continues to shape public expectations.

With K1 De Ultimate’s entrance into the contest, interest within and beyond Ijebuland is expected to grow. Other qualified members of the Fusengbuwa lineage are also expected to declare, but the final decision rests with the ruling house, kingmakers, and custodians of Ijebu tradition.

While nominations proceed, attention will be focused on which princes emerge and how the succession journey unfolds.
