Oscar-nominated actor Djimon Hounsou has admitted he’s still struggling financially after over two decades in Hollywood. Speaking on CNN’s African Voices Changemakers, the star said, “I’m definitely underpaid despite my years in the industry and blockbuster successes.”
Hounsou also talked about racism in Hollywood and how he was denied an Oscar due to stereotyping. “They thought I had just come off the streets, even though I proved myself,” he said.
He went on to blast the way Hollywood approaches diversity: far from reality. “Systemic racism won’t change anytime soon,” said Hounsou.
This actor’s candid utterances really brought out the pervasive inequity in the film industry.
