In a rather intriguing turn of events, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State expressed regret over the recent incident involving the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, who was reportedly assaulted by security operatives. It seems like a case of karma as the labour strike might be seen as payback for the treatment of their leader.
Ajaero was whisked away from the NLC State Council Secretariat by heavily armed policemen in Owerri on November 1, sparking allegations from organized labour that he was mistreated by the police authorities. Initially, the Imo State Police Command denied involvement in his arrest, leading to questions about the police’s role in the incident and whether they were acting like thugs.
Days later, Governor Uzodimma expressed regret over the situation faced by Ajaero, affirming that his government won’t succumb to pressure from any non-state actor. He also addressed the political tension between Imo State and the national leadership of the NLC, mentioning ongoing efforts to handle the situation.
The governor, while acknowledging the assault on the NLC President, condemned what he perceived as an attempt by Ajaero to undermine the leadership of Imo State. Additionally, he clarified that his administration had settled the backlog of salaries owed to Imo workers upon assuming office.
The incident prompted the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to launch an investigation, despite initial denials of police involvement. However, the timing of events
