Heeraben Modi, the mother of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, died at the age of 99.
On Friday morning, he lit his mother’s funeral pyre in Gandhinagar, western Gujarat state, where Heeraben lived.
Heeraben was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday as her health began to deteriorate.
On key events and festivals, the Indian prime minister frequently visited his mother to seek her blessings.
Mr. Modi said on June 18, when Heeraben turned 99, that her life and sacrifices had “molded” his thought, attitude, and self-confidence.
They were last seen in public together on December 4, when Mr. Modi paid a visit to her home during the assembly election in Gujarat, his home state.
Heeraben shared an apartment with Mr. Modi’s younger brother and his family.
On social media, several lawmakers and ministers expressed their grief at her loss.
