A woman died after sliding down the shaft of an airport lift after forcing her way through the wrong set of doors.
After being asked to examine the smell of a foul stench three days later, airport personnel discovered the body of Aisiah Sinta Dewi, 38.
According to an airport spokeswoman, the lift was operational when CNN Indonesia checked on Monday.
They did not specify when the checks were carried out.
Ms. Dewi’s body was taken to a nearby hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Ms. Dewi’s final moments before her deadly fall off the lift at Kualanamu Airport in Medan, northern Indonesia, are seen on CCTV.
She entered the lift through a set of doors, then turned to push the second-floor button. As a second set of doors opened behind her, she stood, waited, and began looking at her phone. Then she appeared to press the lift button again, remaining facing the doors through which she had entered. Ms. Dewi then appeared to make a distressed phone call as she wrenched open the closed doors and stepped into the void.
Her body was discovered three days later at the bottom of the shaft when airport employees complained about a terrible odor.
Ms. Dewi’s family had requested that airport personnel check for her after they lost communication and were unable to locate her in the airport terminal. Ms. Dewi reportedly called her niece just before she died to warn her she was stranded.
Raja Hasibuan, her brother, blamed the event on inadequate elevator security.
Twelve witnesses, including airport officers and security staff, have been questioned by police.
They stated that additional witnesses may be interviewed as they seek answers.
