INEC denies looking into allegations of a US court indictment against Tinubu

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for president, is not under investigation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), despite reports to the contrary.

Festus Okoye, National Commissioner of INEC and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, made a statement in which he distanced the commission from a bogus news release that has been making the rounds online since Friday, November 11, 2022.

The fabricated press release stated that INEC had opened an investigation into a case of criminal forfeiture against one of the presidential candidates in the upcoming general election and that the commission is pursuing the matter in consultation with a court in the United States of America to determine whether there has been a potential violation of INEC’s rules or the Electoral Act 2022.

Okoye stated that “press releases from the commission are simultaneously distributed through our website and official social media accounts and published to the INEC Press Corps platform.”

He thus recommended the general public disregard the news release.
