Is Pie ‘n’ Mash Doomed? MP Leads Fight to Save Iconic Dish

Pie ‘n’ mash is rapidly disappearing from shops in London. It has been this way since recent years, fewer people are eating this, and many of the traditional shops that sold it have closed. This is a simple but popular dish that has been important to the cockney culture in London for many years. This dish is made with minced beef pie, mashed potatoes and parsley sauce, one of the East Londoners favorite food.

This dish started in the 1800s as a cheap meal for working class people in London’s East End. Over time, it became an important part of Cockney culture, which has been passed down from generation to generation. But now that the traditional shops are closing down, people feel that a dish like this that has been part of history, should be protected and saved from disappearing.

Richard Holden’s Proposal

Richard Holden, an Essex politician, also doesn’t want a dish like this to vanish from existence. He plans to lead a parliamentary debate on this issue, about the importance of protecting pie ‘n’ mash traditional recipes. That way, only those who make pie ‘n’ mash the traditional ways can sell it. Richard hopes this will help keep the dish alive and celebrate its place in Cockney culture.

The Traditional Pie ‘n’ Mash

As said earlier, this dish is made with pie filled minced beef and served with mashed potatoes. The sour has a pastry crust that is usually baked until it turns golden brown. The mashed potatoes are made by boiling and mashing the potatoes with butter and milk.

Now, there’s a special part of the dish which makes it more traditional. The special part of the dish is the liquor, which is a green parsley sauce. It doesn’t have alcohol though, but it’s made from parsley, water, floor, and stock from cooking eels.

The icing on the cake is that this dish is eaten with jellied or stewed eels, which are another traditional food. However, some people like to add vinegar, or even chili vinegar, to give the dish more burst of flavor.

The Decline of Pie ‘n’ Mash

We believe the reason for this decline of this consumption has a lot to do with people’s eating habits. People’s eating habits have changed over the years, as more and more individuals are becoming more intentional about their choice of food, and pie ‘n’ mash doesn’t necessarily fit into the healthy food category. Also, there’s no denying that the new fast food and intentional dishes are becoming more popular, taking attention away from the old dishes people used to love a lot.

Shops that sell pie ‘n’ mash are taking all of these changes into consideration. They aren’t sitting back though. So some of the sellers are trying to keep up with the modern times trend by offering things like vegetarian pies to attract new customers. Others now deliver food, making it easier for people to order. But these changes are taking away from the traditional experience of pie ‘n’ mash.

Regardless,some pie ‘n’ mash shops are still doing well by mixing tradition with new ideas. For example, Robins Pie & Mash in Essex has several locations. They are sticking to the old recipe, but they also offer online orders. Some other shops are still adopting this blend which means it’s possible to keep pie ‘n’ mash alive by changing with the times.

Positive Notes

People have a lot of opinions about whether pie ‘n’ mash should be protected. Some think it’s important for Cockney culture, thus it needs a special status. Others believe that it can change without needing protection.

So to keep this dish popular there are some ideas for solutions. One suggestion is to create rules and certification to make sure shops follow traditional recipes. This isn’t a one man job. The government,food industry, and customers need to work together to mark this happen. Sellers can employ strategies like marketing campaigns, special events to make the dish more visible in today’s food scene.
