Is This a Prelude to War? Inside China’s Military Attempts to Isolate Taiwan

The Taiwan Strait has become a militarized stage for a high-stakes game of brinksmanship, as China launched sweeping military drills codenamed “Justice Mission 2025“—simulating the seizure and blockade of the self-ruled island in what Beijing calls a “shield of justice” against “separatist forces.”

The exercises, involving the full might of China’s army, navy, air force, and rocket force, come as a direct and furious response to a recent $11 billion U.S. weapons package sold to Taiwan, the largest in years. Beijing, which claims the island as its own territory, immediately sanctioned the involved U.S. defense firms and has now dispatched warships and aircraft to encircle Taiwan in a show of force described by its military as a warning that “all those plotting independence will be annihilated.”

Taiwan’s defense ministry confirmed it detected a surge of Chinese aircraft and ships around the island on Monday morning, placing its own forces on “high alert” and deploying missile systems to monitor the escalating situation. The presidential office in Taipei slammed the drills as a blatant challenge to international norms, accusing Beijing of destabilizing the region.

The drills, which include live-fire exercises, represent a dangerous escalation under a new, hawkish commander. This week’s operations are the first overseen by General Yang Zhibin, the new chief of China’s Eastern Theatre Command, who assumed his role in October.
