In the wake of the deadliest attack by Palestinian gunmen on Israel in years, Israel and Lebanon’s formidable armed group, Hezbollah, found themselves entangled in a fierce exchange of artillery and rocket fire on Sunday. The violence erupted following a multi-pronged assault on Israeli towns by Palestinian gunmen the previous day, resulting in at least 250 Israeli casualties and over 300 Palestinian fatalities due to Israel’s retaliatory bombardment.
Hezbollah, a well-armed faction with backing from Iran, declared on Sunday that it had fired guided rockets and artillery at three positions in the Shebaa Farms, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian cause. In response, the Israeli military confirmed its artillery fire into Lebanese territory, targeting the area from which the cross-border attack had originated.
Israel’s military further disclosed that one of its drones had struck a Hezbollah post in the Har Dov region of Shebaa. IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari reassured the public by stating, “At this point, there is no further threat in Har Dov or the northern arena,” while emphasizing that the military remained on high alert. Subsequently, the IDF fired a warning shot toward “suspects” in the same Har Dov area.
A Lebanese security source reported that a tent set up by Hezbollah in the Shebaa Farms had been hit, prompting the Hezbollah fighters to set up a new one. Later, another exchange of fire transpired, with rockets launched from Lebanon striking Israeli positions in the Shebaa Farms, and Israel responding with artillery fire targeting the village of Kfar Shouba.
As tensions escalated, there was no immediate comment from the Israeli military or the Lebanese army regarding the second exchange. A separate Lebanese security source, speaking anonymously, revealed that the Lebanese army had intensified patrols in the southern region.
Hezbollah, effectively controlling southern Lebanon, had previously declared “direct contact” with leaders of Palestinian “resistance” groups and perceived the Palestinian attacks on Israel as a “decisive response to Israel’s continued occupation and a message to those seeking normalization with Israel.” The situation remains tense, with both sides closely monitoring developments in the region.
