Israel’s communications minister, Shloma Karhi, announced on Sunday his intention to potentially shut down Al Jazeera’s local bureau, citing allegations of pro-Hamas incitement and the exposure of Israeli soldiers to potential attacks from Gaza.
Karhi revealed that the proposal had undergone scrutiny by Israeli security officials and was currently under review by legal experts, with plans to present it to the cabinet later in the day.
Neither Al Jazeera nor the Qatari government have provided immediate comments on the matter.
Describing the station as a “propaganda mouthpiece” that fuels animosity and films Israeli troops, Karhi emphasized the need to cease the transmission of Hamas spokespeople’s messages through the network.
