On Thursday night, Israeli airstrikes on central Beirut claimed the lives of 18 people and injured at least 92 others, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. A Lebanese security source indicated that at least one senior Hezbollah figure was targeted in the attack.

Strike Location and Impact

Witnesses reported seeing a thick column of smoke rising from central Beirut, with at least one strike hitting near a gas station in a densely populated residential neighborhood. The area, typically composed of apartment buildings and small shops, was thrown into chaos as rescue workers used torches to search through the rubble for survivors. Video footage aired by Hezbollah’s al-Manar television depicted a large fire blazing in the background as the search efforts continued.

Notably, the affected area is not part of Hezbollah’s southern Beirut stronghold, which has been frequently targeted by Israeli forces. The precise identity of the Hezbollah figure targeted in the attack remains unclear.

Israeli Evacuation Warnings and UNIFIL Incident

Though Israel did not immediately comment on the airstrikes, its military issued new evacuation warnings late Thursday for Beirut’s southern suburbs, specifically targeting certain buildings. Earlier in the day, the Israeli army warned Lebanese civilians to avoid returning to homes in southern Lebanon to escape harm from ongoing fighting.

In a related incident, two United Nations peacekeepers from the UNIFIL force were injured when an Israeli tank fired at a watchtower at the force’s main headquarters in Ras al-Naqoura. The Israeli military claimed its forces were operating near the UNIFIL base and had advised the UN personnel to stay in protected spaces before opening fire. UNIFIL condemned the attack, calling it a “grave violation of international humanitarian law.”

U.S. Reaction and Diplomatic Concerns

The White House expressed deep concern over reports that Israeli forces had fired on UN positions and indicated it was pressing Israel for more information. Israel’s military stated that it maintains regular communication with UNIFIL, though tensions surrounding the attacks persist.

Bottom Line

The latest Israeli strikes in Beirut highlight the ongoing and escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with civilian areas increasingly caught in the crossfire. As international actors like the U.S. and UN express concern over the humanitarian and diplomatic implications, the risk of further escalation looms large. Effective communication between military forces and peacekeeping missions remains critical in preventing more casualties and maintaining stability in the region.
