Amid calls for restraint, Israel has vowed to respond to an attack made by Iran on its territory.
On Sunday morning, Iran launched dozens of drones and missiles against Israel in response to an earlier attack by Israel on its embassy in Syria.
Although most of the Iranian missiles and drones were intercepted before reaching their targets in Israel, there has been growing anticipation about how Israel will respond to the unprovoked attack.
US President Joe Biden, Israel’s strongest ally, reportedly stated that the US would not participate in a counterattack on Iran.
This situation leaves Israel in a challenging position, as it must decide whether to respond to Iran’s attack as a deterrent to other nations or heed the US’s request for restraint.
Given these circumstances, Israel faces a critical decision. Since the conflict with Hamas began, Israel has been engaged in ongoing tensions with Iran-backed groups in Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, who may see Iran’s actions as an opportunity to escalate hostilities with Israel.
Despite the complexities of the situation and potential ramifications, Reuters quoted Herzi Halevi, Israel’s military chief of staff, saying that Israel will respond, but he did not elaborate on the details.
Halevi made these remarks while visiting Nevatim Air Base in southern Israel, which sustained damage during the attack.
“This launch of numerous missiles, cruise missiles, and drones into Israeli territory will be met with a response,” Halevi stated.
