According to a draft of the 2024 budget obtained on Saturday, the Italian government intends to raise taxes on short-term rentals for those who rent out more than one apartment.
This decision follows criticism directed at platforms like Airbnb for exacerbating the scarcity of affordable housing in popular tourist destinations.
Under current Italian law, apartment owners can rent out their properties and are subject to a 21% tax rate on their earnings.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni aims to increase this rate to 26% “in the case of the short-term rental of more than one apartment in each tax period,” as indicated in the draft.
The government, however, has modified its initial proposal, as previous versions of the draft had suggested the tax increase would also apply to single-apartment short-term rentals.
Meloni confirmed on Saturday that her cabinet had agreed on the 2024 budget bill, which is set to be presented to parliament on Monday. The approval process is anticipated to extend until December.
