Jake Paul, 27, easily won by unanimous decision against 58-year-old boxing legend Mike Tyson in their hyped fight Saturday morning in Arlington, Texas’ AT&T Stadium. The social media star-turned-prizefighter outperformed the aging legend in every round as he swept the cards with scores of 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73.
Paul was using his hand and foot speed advantage to dominate the fight, landing clean combinations in an attempt to keep Tyson at bay. The relentless pace of the younger fighter came to a head during a dominant third round in which he hurt Tyson with a torrent of punches. He was, however, unable to finish the job after boldly predicting a knockout during the heated weigh-in earlier this week in which Tyson slapped him.
Tyson, making his first professional appearance in nearly two decades, had a tough night as he was only able to connect 18 of his 97 punches, while Paul connected 78 shots of his 278 thrown. The once-feared heavyweight champion looked slow and wasn’t able to show much of the ferocity that was present during his prime.
With the final round out of the way, Paul nodded respect to Tyson, who received a standing ovation from a crowd that was reminded he was a 55-year-old man who took a one-sided beating. The bout represented the continued evolution of Paul inside the ropes and a sobering reminder that Tyson is, indeed, very old.
