Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has issued a significant ruling today in favor of the Federal Government’s application to safeguard witnesses involved in the prosecution of Tukur Mamu. Mamu stands accused of alleged connections with terrorists responsible for the 2022 attack on a Kaduna-bound train.
During the court proceedings, the Office of the Attorney-General for the Federation presented an ex-parte motion, seeking four specific orders. Firstly, they requested that only parties and their legal representatives, along with members of the accredited press, be allowed to attend the hearing. Secondly, they sought an order for the court to be vacated whenever prosecution witnesses are called to testify. The third order pertained to the protection of the physical identity of prosecution witnesses through the use of facial masks or screens during their testimony. Lastly, they asked for the court’s directive to utilize pseudonyms for prosecution witnesses, keeping their real names and addresses confidential throughout the proceedings.
Justice Ekwo granted the motion as requested and scheduled the trial commencement for July 21.
The Background of Tukur Mamu’s Case
Tukur Mamu was arraigned before Justice Inyang Ekwo by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation on allegations of being associated with terrorists. Notably, Mamu denied having any allegiance to the said terrorist group during the hearing.
Earlier Developments and Charges
On September 13, 2022, Justice Nkeonye Maha of a sister court granted the Department of State Services (DSS) permission to detain Tukur Mamu for 60 days to facilitate their investigation. The investigation was related to Mamu’s involvement in negotiating with terrorists for the release of hostages from the Abuja-Kaduna train attack in March 2022.
The charges against Mamu, signed by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mr. M.B. Abubakar, accuse him of receiving ransom payments on behalf of the Boko Haram terrorist group from the families of hostages taken during the train attack. The amounts involved are alleged to be $120,000 and NSOO,000.
Additionally, Mamu is charged with engaging in voice communications with a Boko Haram spokesperson, Baba Adamu, in relation to acts of terrorism. The federal government has also accused him of dealing with terrorist funds worth $300,000, found in his possession.
The Tragic Train Attack and Ongoing Insecurity
The Abuja-Kaduna train attack that led to Mamu’s prosecution occurred on March 28, 2022, in Katari, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Bandits carried out the assault, kidnapping hundreds of passengers and causing fatalities and injuries. The incident sent shockwaves through Nigeria, sparking nationwide discussions about security concerns in the country.
Despite efforts to address the issue, insecurity continues to plague Nigeria. The subsequent attack on the St. Louis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, on May 5, 2022, further underscored the severity of the problem. With over 40 people killed and several others injured, citizens are left wondering when Nigeria will overcome its security challenges and whether there are influential figures supporting these bandits.
As Tukur Mamu’s trial unfolds, the nation keeps a close eye on the proceedings, hoping for justice and an end to the insecurity that continues to grip the country.
