Civil servants in Jigawa State have refused to go back to work after the Christmas holidays that had been announced by the Federal Government.

A visit to the State Secretariat and offices of other government agencies had revealed that majority of the civil servants had not returned back to work as at Wednesday, 27 December.

Recall that the Federal Government announced Monday and Tuesday as work-free days to celebrate the Christmas holiday.

It was also observed that even the busy Kiyawa Road was left abandoned, as compared to normal working days.

Several restaurants were also not open while others were working at half capacity.

Khadija, a restaurant owner, had remarked that the situation was normal in the area whenever there was a lull in the middle of the week.

According to her, the restaurant usually works half days during such periods because most of the civil servants would have travelled and they may not come back until the following week.

Another Civil servant, Malam Musa, had said:
“Whenever public holidays occur in the middle of the week, the whole week gets paralyzed because most civil servants might not come back until the following week.

“The transport fare is pricey and even when you resume you might not find anything to do.”
