England’s star midfielder Jude Bellingham is set to feature in the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland after UEFA handed him a suspended one-match ban for his controversial celebration in the previous round.
Following his dramatic stoppage-time equalizer against Slovakia, Bellingham mimicked a crotch grab, a gesture he claimed was an “inside joke” aimed at friends. UEFA found him guilty of violating the “basic rules of decent conduct” and fined him 30,000 euros ($32,477). However, they decided to suspend the ban for one year, allowing him to play against Switzerland.
England manager Gareth Southgate praised UEFA’s decision, calling it a “common sense” approach considering the circumstances surrounding the celebration. “When you score a goal of the quality that he did, at the moment that he did, you’re going to have an incredible rush of adrenaline,” Southgate remarked. “From our perspective, we thought it was a sensible outcome. I think he is aware of the investigation, and he’s an intelligent guy.”
Bellingham, who has been pivotal for England with two goals in four matches, is expected to start in Dusseldorf on Saturday evening. His presence will be crucial as England aim to end their 58-year wait for a major tournament title.
Despite a series of unconvincing performances, England find themselves with a favorable path in the knockout stages. Victory over Switzerland would lead to a semi-final encounter against either Turkey or the Netherlands.
On the opposite side of the draw, heavyweights Spain face Germany, while Portugal takes on France, adding to the intensity of the tournament. Under Southgate, England have consistently reached the latter stages of major tournaments, finishing as runners-up in the last Euros and reaching the semi-finals and quarter-finals in the last two World Cups.
As the knockout stages heat up, all eyes will be on Bellingham and the Three Lions as they seek to make history and secure a place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.
