The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court has handed down a life imprisonment sentence to Dr. Olufemi Olaleye, the Medical Director of the Optimal Cancer Care Foundation. The sentence came in response to his conviction for defiling his wife’s niece when she was just 15 or 16 years old.
This case is particularly distressing as Dr. Olaleye, a medical professional who should be advocating against such heinous acts, was found guilty of sexual assault on a minor. The prosecution, led by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr. Babajide Martins, successfully demonstrated the defendant’s culpability.
Dr. Olaleye was arraigned on November 30, 2022, on charges of defilement and sexual assault by penetration of the minor, spanning from December 2019 to July 2022. The assaults occurred while the victim was living with the Olaleye family.
Throughout the trial, six witnesses, including the minor, the defendant’s wife, a medical doctor, a child care expert, and two police officers, provided crucial testimony. Dr. Olaleye and a long-time friend testified in his defense, as well as a forensic physician who disputed the medical evidence presented by the prosecution.
Justice Rahman Oshodi, in his judgment, emphasized the compelling nature of the evidence, particularly Dr. Olaleye’s confessional statement, in which he expressed regret for his actions. The judge discredited the defendant’s denial of the statement during the trial.
The court found Dr. Olaleye guilty and described him as a dangerous offender who displayed no remorse. Justice Oshodi condemned the horrific nature of the crimes, stating that the survivor was forced to watch pornography, endure sexual abuse, and repeatedly endure penetration.
This case serves as a stark warning that regardless of one’s societal position, the law will bring offenders to justice if they defy it. In his plea for leniency, Dr. Olaleye’s counsel highlighted his services as a medical doctor specializing in cancer-related ailments, especially for women. However, the judge sentenced him to life imprisonment on both counts and ordered his name to be included in the Sexual Offences Register of the Lagos State Government.
Throughout the trial, the survivor’s aunt, Aderemi Olaleye, testified that she had discovered the abuse after her niece confided in her and their family’s driver. The survivor revealed that Dr. Olaleye had been subjecting her to sexual abuse and threats, which led to this legal action.
This case is a testament to the need for victims of rape to speak out and seek help. Staying silent after such a traumatic experience is not advisable for one’s mental health. It also underscores the importance of stringent penalties for perpetrators, as justice has been served in this instance.
