The Kano Emirate is currently embroiled in a conflict of legitimacy with two emirs claiming the throne. This unusual situation follows the Kano State Government’s decision to depose Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and reinstate Emir Muhammad Sanusi II through a new law that dissolved the five emirates created by the previous administration of Governor Ganduje. This move has led to a divided emirate with each faction supporting a different emir.

The Two Emirs

Aminu Ado Bayero’s Stand

Deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero conducted his first ceremonial sitting on Monday at the Nasarawa Mini Palace, where he has been residing since his return to Kano. Bayero, decked in full royal regalia, received supporters and district heads who paid him homage, signaling his continued claim to the throne. Bayero’s loyalists view him as the legitimate Emir of Kano despite the government’s decision.

Muhammad Sanusi II’s Reinstatement

Meanwhile, the reinstated Emir Muhammad Sanusi II has also been active, conducting ceremonial sittings at the Main Palace. So far, 40 out of the 65 district heads in the state have paid him homage. Sanusi, supported by the Kano State Government and other officials, operates from the Main Palace with security provided by vigilantes and local hunters.

Division and Legal Tussles

The emirate is visibly divided, with some factions affirming their support for Bayero, while others stand firmly behind Sanusi. The legal battle continues as the state police command has vowed to enforce a court order barring the Kano State Government from reinstating Sanusi pending the resolution of a substantive case.

Currently, Bayero remains at the Nasarawa Mini Palace, protected by a significant security presence, while Sanusi is bolstered by government support and other officials who recognize him as the legitimate leader.

Bottom Line

The conflict within the Kano Emirate reflects deeper political and legal struggles over traditional leadership roles and governance. With the legal battle still unresolved, the emirate remains divided, causing uncertainty and tension among the people. The resolution of this conflict will require careful legal and political maneuvering to restore stability and unity within the Kano Emirate.
