Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has submitted a proposed 2025 budget totaling N549.16 billion to the State Assembly, reporting a 2024 budget performance of 77 percent. Speaking at the State Assembly Chamber on Friday, Governor Yusuf outlined that the budget allocates N312.63 billion for capital expenditures and N236.52 billion for recurrent expenses.

Governor Yusuf highlighted a projected capital-to-recurrent ratio of 57:43, with a significant portion directed toward social and economic development. Key allocations include education (N168.35 billion, 31%), health (N90.60 billion, 16.5%), agriculture (N21.04 billion, 3.83%), and infrastructure development (N70.68 billion, 12.87%).

The budget also earmarks funds for other critical sectors: Manufacturing, Commerce, Industry, and Tourism (N3.88 billion, 1.22%); Environment and Sanitation (N15.52 billion, 2.83%); and Governance Institutions (N98.24 billion, 17.57%). Governor Yusuf noted that the 2024 budget of N437.3 billion achieved a 77% performance rate due to effective revenue management and efforts to block financial leakages.

Reflecting on 2024’s economic challenges, Governor Yusuf acknowledged the impact of federal economic reforms, price hikes, and currency fluctuations on citizens, which led to protests in August. He emphasized the importance of supporting youth and addressing their concerns, announcing that the Kano government has prioritized youth-centered programs to foster stability and opportunity.

Bottom Line:

Kano State’s 2025 budget proposal demonstrates a commitment to social and economic sectors, with a focus on youth empowerment amidst ongoing economic challenges. Governor Yusuf’s emphasis on effective budget management and youth-oriented initiatives aims to strengthen the state’s resilience and address citizens’ pressing needs.
